Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) | FSO, FPSO and FLNG Operations, Commissioning, Operational Readiness
Independent FPSO | FLNG Advisor, Offshore Installation Manager
About From Tanker Officer to FLNG OIM — Helping Seafarers Build Offshore Career. I started at sea in 2007 as an 18-year-old cadet on LPG carriers. Today I work as Offshore Installation Manager on FLNG facilities. The path between those two points is what I want to talk to you about. My career went through LPG, chemical, product, and VLCC tankers before transitioning into FSO, FPSO, and FLNG operations. Seven floating production assets so far — across SBM Offshore, MODEC, Yinson with Petrobras pre-salt Brazil, TechnipFMC, ENI within FLNG sector. I also spent three years working onshore in Singapore and China — based in operator and EPC offices, and embedded in shipyards during construction and conversion phases. That experience covered the full project lifecycle: engineering, fabrication, construction supervision, commissioning preparation, and the handover from yard to offshore operations. This combination — sea-going operational background plus office and shipyard experience — is rare in the industry. Most offshore professionals see only one side. I have worked both, and I understand how decisions made in the office and yard determine what offshore crews actually deal with later. The transition from merchant marine into offshore was not random. It required specific decisions about which experience to pursue, which certifications to invest in, which contracts to take and which to refuse, and a fundamental mindset shift most seafarers underestimate. Sea-going experience prepares you for much of what offshore demands — but not all of it. Who I mentor Seafarers, deck officers, marine engineers, and junior offshore professionals who are considering or actively working toward the move into FPSO and FLNG roles. The session works best when you already have several years at sea and want honest perspective on what comes next. What I bring Nearly two decades of operational experience — cargo operations on tankers, FSO, FPSO, FLNG, marine assurance during commissioning and start-up, operational readiness for first-of-kind floating production projects, SIMOPS coordination, Class and Flag interface, crew development, and senior offshore leadership through Marine Superintendent and OIM roles. What I do not offer Job placement. Contract leads. Direct introductions to specific employers. Anyone promising those things in mentorship is not being straight with you. What I do offer Honest, direct, experience-based career advice from someone who made the same transition you are considering — and from someone who still works in the sector today. If that fits what you are looking for, book the free 15-minute intro call. We can decide together whether a longer session makes sense.
What we can discuss How to position yourself for FPSO, FLNG opportunities while still at sea Which certifications, courses, and operational experience actually matter to offshore employers How offshore hierarchy, culture, and accountability differ from merchant marine Career progression paths from junior officer to senior offshore leadership — and the realistic timelines The operational and mindset differences between cargo carrier, FSO, FPSO, and FLNG environments Honest assessment of where you currently stand and what your realistic next move looks like
